Item Description
"Keith Abbott's work is contemporary with an ancient feel," says Shambhala Sun art director Liza Matthews. This painting of a bird and monk first appeared in the March 2009 issue and was added to the online gallery soon after. Liza chose the ink drawing as the opening illustration for Norman Fischer's piece, "Applied Dharma" - about Zen coming to the West and adapting to life here. She says of the piece that "it has a spontaneous, on-the-spot feel but it is clearly Zen, which expresses exactly the spirit of the ancient tradition of Zen manifesting freshly in the West." The Foundation is very glad to be able to offer this original painting in the auction.
Keith Abbott teaches writing and art at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. His publications include novels, short stories, essays, and memoirs. His art and calligraphy appear in both the Shambhala Sun and Buddhadharma and in group and solo shows in San Francisco, Denver, Boulder, Shanghai, Seoul and San Antonio.
For prints of "Hotei Bird and Monk" go to the Shambhala Sun online gallery.
