The ballot box establishes a covenant. It is within (or through) the ballot box that a people gathers (or constitutes) itself as a democracy. To cast a ballot is to shape a body politic. The ballot box is social sculpture.
This piece was made for and first exhibited as part of an installation and performance work titled: In My Father’s House: An Historical Melancholy in Two Acts for the June-October 2000 exhibition, “Hindsight/Fore-site: Art for the New Millennium” organized by the University of Virginia Art Museum,Charlottesville.
