Item Description

Two passes to the "Stokin' The Fire BBQ and Music Festival" at Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, AL on Saturday, August 22, 2009.

COME EAT! At the cornerstone of the two-day event is a world-class BBQ competition, sanctioned by the prestigious Kansas City Barbeque Society. The competition will pit up to 72 professional BBQers from around the country against each other for $20,000 in cash and prizes. At the same time, as many as 50 local amateur BBQ teams will compete for the braggin' rights to the best Q in Birmingham. The festival has something for everyone! In addition to the BBQ battles, visitors can enjoy all day headliner music at the Stokin' stage, purchase BBQ from nationally acclaimed BBQ vendors, and enjoy global grilling demonstrations by chefs from some of Birmingham's best restaurants. Kids will also have plenty of rib ticklin' fun in the new and improved kids zone, with a variety of free activities and entertainment under the water tower stage.

Sloss Furnaces produced iron for nearly 90 years, which gave rise to the city of Birmingham. Now recognized as a National Historic Landmark, Sloss Furnaces with its web of pipes and tall smokestacks offers us a glimpse into the great industrial past of the South and our nation. Thanks to preservation efforts, Sloss Furnaces has the unique distinction of having the only 20th century blast furnace in the world.  Every year more than 100,000 people visit the Sloss Furnaces and Cultural Park to get a close-up look at the original structure.  There is plenty of space on the grounds where visitors can picnic while enjoying musical and dramatic performances.  Sloss also supports a unique Metal Arts program which includes a sculpture studio, art foundry and art education.  General admission is free but our package offers you access to some of the paid events.
