Navajo -- Etched Horse Hair Wedding Vase Pottery
- Item Number
- 207
Item Description
This beautiful horse hair wedding vase pottery is designed and hand etched by potter Stan Shepherd, JR., (Din’e) Navajo. This vase is a combination of traditional “Navajo Etched Pottery” and the contemporary style of horse hair. Native American Pottery comes in all styles and horse hair pottery is very unique. It not only combines the skill of the artist but also the unpredictable forces of nature when using the horse hair. The artist starts with a molded ceramic pot, vase or animal shape and then determines the beauty of the finished piece by permanently penetrating the pot with carbon from the burning horse hair. The artist applies the horse hair by hand and as the fire consumes the horse hair it creates an original piece that will never be duplicated. Intricate patterns are deeply etched into this wedding vase (including a Kokopelli) accented with a small piece of turquoise. A Wedding vase is an ancient vessel still used in traditional wedding ceremonies. One spout of the vase represents the husband and the other the wife with the looped handle representing the unity achieved with marriage. This piece measures 6-1/4” tall, 4” wide, and 3-1/4” in diameter. Signed by the artist.
