A THEATRE PROGRAM FOR MNS
MNS’s arts programming would love a theatre component across kindergarten through fifth. A theatre program can play a significant role in the continual development of our students’ reading comprehension, and it would give our students another way to access our curriculum by allowing them to use their bodies, voices and minds to understand characters and storytelling. The lessons are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. In addition to improving comprehension and communication skills, involvement in drama lessons would improve students’ creativity, problem-solving skills, focus, confidence and their ability to collaborate.
Vital Voices: Art in Education Program, a part of the Vital Theatre Company, has designed a theatre arts residency program for our entire school. The number of sessions per grade will range from 6-12. It benchmarks from the NYC Department of Education’s Blueprint for the Arts in Theatre. The proposed program addresses many of the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in reading, writing, speaking and listening for all grades as well as Common Core State Standards for Mathematics for fourth and fifth grades.
