Surmang Foundation is a US 501(c)3 nonprofit (?Friends of Surmang, Inc.). Surmang has operated a clinic in a remote, ethnic Tibetan corner of Qinghai Province, since 1992. In the past 10 years alone this clinic has treated over 130,000 patients a year for free, including meds. These are people who earn less than US14?/day. They are farmers and nomads who live a very traditional and threatened way of life. This area has maternal and child mortality rates as high as any place in the world. 3000/100,000 mothers will die in birth there, compared to 80/100,000 in Beijing. A pregnant woman has a 1 in 15 chance of dying before or during delivery, roughly three times the risk to a US soldier in Afghanistan. This clinic has delivered a unique kind of community-based health care relying on local doctors and a corps of 40 Community Health Workers. Our model is so successful that after the devastating 7.1 Richter earthquake in April, we were asked by the government to roll out our prototype to 5 additional clinics and to rebuild one of these 5. This auction seeks your support for this project, to bring quality health care to these ancient peoples.
