Elgin Academy, founded in 1839, is an independent, coed, college-preparatory day school with approximately 426 students enrolled in preschool through twelfth grade. The school occupies an eighteen-acre campus 35 miles northwest of Chicago in the Historic District of the City of Elgin, Illinois. Elgin Academy offers a classical, academic, college-preparatory curriculum for students who will benefit from an accelerated program. Small classes are the key to facilitating individualized instruction in which teachers are able to give close attention to each student's personal development. The Academy's preschool through twelfth grade faculty consists of 60 teachers and administrators. 80% of the Upper School faculty holds advanced degrees. 100% have at least five years of teaching experience, and 92% have at least 10 years of teaching experience. The student/teacher ratio in the Upper School is 5:1. The Academy is personal both in size and attitude. The some of the same teachers also coach in the Academy's athletic programs, direct dramatic and choral performances, and supervise numerous co-curricular activities and community service projects.
