Jars are always cool. You can keep candy, or you can keep Uncle Earl's ashes in them. Just don't get them mixed up.
Dave Henry (The Mud Man) Potter
I have been throwing pottery for over ten years. I studied under Ban Kajitani, a Japanese potter who taught at the Columbus College of Art and Design back in the mid seventies.
The piece of pottery you have in your hand is made of a type of clay known as stoneware. Stoneware clay is a very durable clay. All of my pieces are one of a kind. I make what is in my heart.
Throwing- The clay is thrown on the wheel and then while it is still wet crumbled dry clay is applied to the outside.
Bisque Firing - After the pot has dried (it normally takes about a week or two) it is placed in the kiln and fired to about 1900F. It normally takes about 24 hours for the first firing.
Glazing - After the pot has been cooled to room temperature it is given a coat of glaze in this case black glaze was used. The pot is set aside to dry. When the glaze is dry using a paintbrush dipped in water some of the glaze is removed. By using a wet brush glaze is left in all of the craters and low spots. When I feel I have removed enough I set the pot aside to dry.
Final Firing - Once again when the pot is completely dry it is placed back into the kiln this time at a higher temperature. Normally about 2200F.
The finished product is checked for any rough edges or sharp areas and the bottom is lightly ground for a smooth surface.
I hope you enjoy this one of kind piece of pottery and that it will serve you for many years.
Item Special Note
- This piece stands about 6.5 – 7” tall if you include the acorn and about the same width.
- The glaze is a wonderful textured earthly glaze.
