Item Description

Two Vintage Collector’s Edition Star Trek Voyager VHS Tapes

Star Trek: Voyager (VOY) focuses on the 24th century adventures of Captain Kathryn Janeway aboard the U.S.S. Voyager.  Smaller than either Kirk’s or Picard’s starships—its crew complement is only 150—Voyager is fast and powerful, and has the ability to land on a planet’s surface.  It is one of the most technologically advanced vessels in Starfleet, utilizing computer circuitry that incorporates synthetic neural tissue.  Ironically, Janeway’s inaugural mission aboard Voyager was to be her last in the Alpha quadrant.  While attempting to capture the crew of a renegade Maquis vessel, both her ship and that of the Maquis were pulled into the distant Delta quadrant by powerful alien technology.  Unfortunately, there would be no similar “express” route to take them home again.  Stranded 70,000 light-years from Earth, Janeway convinced the Maquis to join her Starfleet crew and serve together during the long voyage back to Federation space.

The Swarm - Star Trek: Voyager    Stardate: 50252.3

“The Swarm” has Voyager attempting to move quickly through a territory controlled by insect-like creatures, doing their best to avoid this race out of fear that they will instantly be destroyed, as is the aliens’ reputation.  As if this wasn’t enough of a headache for Janeway, she must deal with an error to the Doctor’s memory programs that may force them to “erase” everything he’s experienced over the past two years, returning him to a pure holographic persona.

One of Star Trek’s primary themes was to explore what makes a being sentient and worthy of survival.  It was explored on Star Trek:  The Next Generation in the episode “The Measure of a Man” (which looked at Data as more than Starfleet “property”) and here in “The Swarm,” in the case of the Doctor.

False Profits - Star Trek: Voyager    Stardate: 50074.3

In “False Profits,” a pair of Ferengi have set themselves up as gods to a more primitive planet.  Janeway is determined to extricate them from this society to honor the Federation’s Prime Directive.  At the same time, starship readings detect a wormhole that will be opening that might be able to return Voyager to the Alpha Quadrant – unless the Ferengi screw up the situation (Which they have a penchant for doing).

Executive producer Jeri Taylor offers, “That was a show that we were going to do at some point, because in Star Trek:  The Next Generation it was posited that those Ferengi were in the Delta Quadrant, so it seemed natural that Voyager would run in to them.

Darkling - Star Trek: Voyager    Stardate: 50693.2

In “Darkling,” Kes becomes romantically involved with a member of the Mikhal Travelers, who are trading supplies for information on the Nekrit Expanse, and the Doctor adjusts his programming by adding behavioral subroutines.

Producer Joe Menosky explains, “The notion was to basically do Jekyll and Hyde with the Doctor.  A fun detail about this episode is that when we were discussing how to differentiate the good and dark Doctor, Robert Picardo walked into our offices and looked mean and scary as hell.  Only after he had made his impression did he explain that he had put these contact lenses in that made his eye just black.  On his bottom two teeth he had put this little cap, a little extension of his bottom two teeth that basically pushed out his lower lip a little bit.  I think it was great and Picardo can chew the scenery like nobody else.”

Rise - Star Trek: Voyager    Stardate: 50567.4

In “Rise,” Voyager does the motion picture Deep Impact one better by having the starship dealing with numerous celestial bodies raining havoc on alien worlds, and having the task of saving Nezu colonists from them.

What’s intriguing about “Rise” is that Voyager’s humanitarian mission to save the Nezu turns into something much more sinister, when the writers concoct a scenario in which the deadly asteroids are being artificially guided.  In essence, they’re being used as weapons of destruction by a malevolent race looking to quite literally crush their enemies.
