Item Description
Steam Bending Artwork by Kevin Reiswig
Title: Study
Medium: Steam bent white oak, mahogany
This sculptural study is an example of my own reaction to the practice of steam bending—a manipulative process in which wood is rendered malleable through its exposure to extreme heat and moisture. Most of us recognize wood as a strong, rigid material that holds us up, keeps our possessions, and shelters us; however, wood can be much less stable. My work involves the transformation of a natural substance that has been standardized for commercial means (i.e. milled white oak lumber) into objects that unveil the true energy of the material. The study, much like a painter's sketch, highlights the importance of experimentation in learning and development.
