Item Description
Rob Thiel began painting as a hobby in 1995 with a focus on exploring nature and everyday objects. Most of his painting are derived from a lifetime of photography recomposted by various software applications. The digitized image allows a 2nd look, finding new light, texture, and angles. Acrylic painting was a natural way to reimagine the photographs on a larger canvas.
In 2015, Rob began experimenting with Encaustic painting. Encaustic, which means to 'burn or infuse', uses natural bee's wax mixed with resin. Mixed media is often added including ink, shella, and found objects. Encausting painting requires a solid board instead of canvas and a blow torch becomes the paint brush. Working with wax requires a step away from controlled detail to a hot liquid medium which often has a mind of its own.
Rob has taken classes in abstract painting and etching at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA. His works have been shown at the Creekside Gallery in Hague New York. He works in his home studio in Vienna, VA.
Donated by the Vander Naald Family.
